Retail management jobs have a variety of responsibilities including being in charge of other employees, organizing schedules, balancing receipts, handling customer service, and a variety of other duties. If you are interested in this kind of career, it is preferred that you have not only retail experience but management experience as well. Many retail stores will require you to have some business or management education as well, but isn’t required in some cases if you have experience.
Have an Impeccable Resume
Your resume is the first thing the interviewer will see, both when you apply for the job and when you arrive at the interview. It should be impressive though professional and not flashy. Use a template for the resume if you’re not comfortable formatting it yourself. You should use a standard type of font that is average size and easy to read such as Arial or Times New Roman at size 10, 12 or 14. Resumes should preferably be a page or less but if you have more work experience to add, you can extend it to 2 pages.
Prepare Ahead of Time
As with most interviews, you should be prepared to interview for a retail management job. This includes finding out more about the company or retail store, the type of management position they have, and anything you can find out about the person who will interview you. These types of details make a difference during your interview, especially if they ask you what you know about the company and you can give details about what they do, what they sell, and their brief history. Other ways of preparing for the interview include practicing answering interview questions that are common, coming up with questions to ask at the end of the interview, and being sure you know how to get to the retail store.
Show Your Experience
Many retail stores don’t require education as long as you have adequate experience. The majority of jobs in retail management want a combination of retail experience, preferably for the same type of store, and some management experience as well. Be prepared to present the interviewer with the type of experience you have, such as having retail employees under you, working for a clothing store for an extended period of time, or showing leadership qualities.
During the interview, always remain professional and courteous. Never interrupt the interviewing when they are speaking and answer questions open and honestly. Sit up straight, don’t fidget, and keep eye contact with them at all times.
