After sending the time and money to go to college, you will want to use that education you received to begin your career. Unfortunately, many employers are looking for someone with some experience. Here are some secrets to getting your first job after getting your college degree.
Find Your Passions
Regardless of what major you go tin college, you have some passions that you feel strongly about. This is the direction your career should lead. While it helps to have a degree at least somewhat related to your passions, it isn’t necessarily mandatory. However, when you start interviewing for jobs that follow along your area of interest, it shows during the interview in how you answer questions.
Find a Relevant Internship
There are multiple benefits to internships, even if they don’t pay you anything. When you finish college, there is no way for an employer to know what kind of skills you have. But accepting an internship gives you the chance to showcase your professional skills and build upon them. It may also lead to a permanent position at the company where you intern if you choose one related to what you’re looking for in your career goals.
If you are still enrolled in college, think about volunteering for an organization in the same type of industry where you want to work. For example, if you are going to college to become a social worker, see if your local social services office is accepting volunteers. Even if you’re just answering calls, sorting mail or providing simple office tasks, you are in with the industry and this experience can prove useful once you finish college and get your degree.
Step Outside of Your Comfort Zone
Some occupations require a little more legwork and you may need to get out of your comfort zone. Say, for example, you are an artist and hoping to work at an art gallery due to your degree in art. Well, it might be hard proving your skills for working in a gallery, but you can catch the attention of a gallery by showcasing your own paintings or works of art at local venues, coffee shops or retail stores. Ask if you can put up your art, offering it to them free of charge or even for sale. You may catch the eye of someone who owns a gallery and is currently looking for someone experienced to help run it.
Don’t Give Up
Right after graduating college, it can be disconcerting when you don’t get offered a job right away. Keep in mind you’re competing against hundreds of other applicants who may have more experience on their resumes. This means you need to perfect your own resume and when you get called for an interview, you prove exactly why you are the best person for the job.
