Being a freelancer and working for yourself has its share of benefits but it also has drawbacks. One of the main disadvantages to freelance work is that you can’t ever guarantee on work or a paycheck. You spend your time either working or looking for work and even when you get a good job, there is zero guarantee that it will last. This means if you want to be a freelancer, you will have to focus your energy and time on staying employed and constantly looking for more projects to work on.
Have Multiple Jobs
Just because you have found one employer or client that offers you plenty of work, doesn’t mean you should only work for them. The term “don’t put all your eggs in one basket” means to not focus all your energy on one thing. In freelancing, it means to have more than one client and job because you never know when that one basket will disappear. If you were working for 4 clients, you would still have 3 solid clients with work instead of no clients and no work.
Keep Looking for Work
When you get to the point that you’re more than busy and have no free time for more projects, don’t let that stop you from looking for more work. Get your name known, work on your blog, post ads for your services, and advertise your website. Try to find at least 20 minutes a day to focus on advertising your services just in case you need more work. You will have some good clients lined up and won’t have to go too long before finding more projects.
Do Excellent Work
Focus on your current work by providing excellent services, whether you’re a virtual assistant, writer, or graphic designer. Always keep them updated on your availability, offer to provide extra work and services when they need help, submit error-proof work and always meet deadlines. These small things make you an outstanding freelancer and will increase your chances of keeping your current freelancing work.
Learn New Skills
If you do lose a client o are suddenly part time, take this extra time to learn new skills. For example, if you’re a graphic designer who makes buttons and web layouts, you could learn how to make flash websites or write code for more advanced websites for your clients. Each new skill you learn is going to give you more job opportunities for the future and increase your hiring potential. Clients are more willing to hire someone to do multiple tasks for them.
